Giving back - an advisor's tale

Riina Salmimies is one of Indoor's long-term advisors. She has done exceptional work in terms of funding preparations, legal matters and public communications. Learn more about Riina and how she invested an award for being our most trusted advisor in 2019.
Indoor operates an advisory board made up of talented and insightful people. With a start-up, being an advisor does not mean meeting four times a year over coffee and cake. We work very closely together and I too put my back into the business where possible. They teach me and I teach them.
I have multiple motivations to participate in start-ups but there is something rare and especially valuable that Indoor does. Helping out a start-up is not about money for me and the hassle of dealing with taxes for fees does not appeal to me. When Indoor proposed to reward the best of us by assigning a 1000 euro to a charity of one's choosing, I knew what I wanted to do.
Riina_KamuFinally, after a year's work with Indoor, I was privileged to choose the charity of my liking. I already donate regularly to WWF and to Unicef for the wellbeing of animals and children and the decision was thus not difficult.
I decided to donate half to Viipurin Koirat Ry, that through volunteering and donations takes care of the stray dogs in Vyborg. We too have a dog and knowing that not all dogs in the world are as fortunate as our Kamu makes me sad. I cannot do much but I can do something so that they would have food, shelter and basic care.
The other half went to Mannerheimin Lastensuojeluliitto (The Mannerheim League for Child Welfare, MLL) that promotes child welfare. I too have a personal experience of MLL as with their help me and my sister got to go to Linnanmäki, an amusement park in Helsinki, when we were little girls. I will always remember that. They gave me something and I now wanted to give something back.
We can all do something in this world to help someone else - someone not so fortunate, someone in need. Start-ups don't have deep pockets but still Indoor helped me do that. And I am grateful.
With a warm heart,
Advisor Riina Salmimies
